We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established, multi-disciplinary property and construction organisation delivering professional consultancy services to public and private sector clients. The business combines local delivery with the backing, resources, and project pipeline of a larger national group.
Based in Exeter, the organisation provides a broad range of property-related services, including building surveying, architectural design, M&E engineering, project management, and estate management. The Building Surveyor will join an experienced, collaborative team working across a varied and interesting portfolio of projects.
The role is based in a modern, open-plan office on the outskirts of Exeter, offering excellent access from the M5 corridor. The organisation operates a flexible and agile working policy, allowing home working alongside site and office-based activity. Due to the nature of the role, there will be a significant amount of site-based work, primarily across Devon.
The Role
The Building Surveyor will be responsible for providing professional building surveying and maintenance consultancy services, working independently or as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering projects in accordance with RICS standards
- Providing technical and professional advice to clients, stakeholders, and internal team members
- Leading and contributing to the delivery of high-quality, client-focused services
- Preparing specifications, drawings, and risk assessments for improvement, refurbishment, and new build projects
- Preparing tender documentation and undertaking contract administration, project management, and site monitoring duties
- Carrying out building condition surveys, schedules of condition, dilapidations, measured surveys, and planned maintenance
- Undertaking defect analysis, including investigation, research, and preparation of technical reports
- Supporting conservation projects, including material investigation, repair methods, and quality control
- Achieving a fee-earning target of 90% and contributing to wider business objectives
- Travelling to other offices and sites as required
About You
This role would suit an experienced Building Surveyor who enjoys a varied workload and working within a professional, multi-disciplinary environment.
You will ideally have:
- Membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and be working toward (or willing to work toward) Chartered status
- Proven experience in a similar Building Surveying role
- Experience across a mix of new build and refurbishment projects
- Strong knowledge of Building Regulations and relevant construction legislation
- The ability to work independently with minimal supervision or as part of a larger team
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build and maintain professional client relationships
- Strong communication and negotiation skills at all levels
