We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established, multi-disciplinary property and construction organisation with an in-house architectural design team. Based in Exeter, the organisation delivers projects across Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset, primarily within the public sector, supported by the resources and stability of a larger national group.

The Exeter office provides an excellent base, whether you are already local or considering relocation. It benefits from strong transport links, easy access to the M5, and offers a healthy work–life balance, allowing you to enjoy living and working in the South West.

The design team is highly collaborative, working across a broad range of RIBA stages and supporting emerging talent through apprenticeships and work placements. The project portfolio is predominantly focused on the education sector, including early years, primary and secondary schools, further and higher education, and SEND provision. In addition, the team delivers a diverse range of projects across other public and commercial sectors, offering a varied, stimulating, and rewarding workload.

The Role

As a Senior Architectural Technician / Technologist, you will play a key role across all stages of design and project delivery. The position involves leading projects, coordinating multi-disciplinary inputs, and producing high-quality technical information. You will also provide technical and site-based support to ensure projects are delivered to agreed standards, programmes, and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as project lead where appropriate and coordinating consultants and internal teams across all RIBA stages
  • Developing designs and producing detailed technical drawings, specifications, and construction information to a high professional standard
  • Working independently on assigned projects while providing management, supervision, and guidance to junior team members
  • Preparing and submitting Planning and Building Control applications, securing statutory approvals
  • Undertaking design and technical reviews within the design team
  • Mentoring and supporting junior colleagues through guidance, feedback, and work reviews
  • Attending client, consultant, and contractor meetings, and carrying out site inspections as required
  • Supporting business development activities and contributing to organisational growth
  • Demonstrating a commitment to responsible, sustainable, and ethical working practices

Candidate Requirements

This role is suited to an experienced and confident Senior Technician or Technologist who enjoys taking ownership and leading technically complex projects.

You will ideally have:

  • CIAT membership (or be working toward accreditation/chartership), or equivalent senior-level technical qualifications
  • Extensive experience delivering complex construction projects from concept through to completion
  • Strong experience working on education-sector projects
  • Advanced proficiency in Revit (essential), with strong Autodesk 2D drafting capability
  • Excellent specification writing skills, ideally using NBS Chorus
  • Strong design, technical, and construction knowledge, with high-quality detailing skills across new build and refurbishment projects
  • In-depth knowledge of UK Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act, and construction methods
  • Proven ability to manage workloads, meet deadlines, and lead others effectively
  • Excellent communication skills with a proactive, solution-focused approach
  • A positive, collaborative mindset and commitment to high technical standards

The Package

  • 25 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays
  • Company pension and sickness scheme
  • Professional fees fully funded
  • Hybrid and flexible working arrangements
  • Access to company discounts and benefits
  • Support with professional qualifications and further education
